Football
Passion and football go hand in hand in the North East and the region’s football teams provide some excellent community programmes. But there are not enough trained coaches and officials to help develop the next generation of talent.
The Tony Blair Sports Foundation is working with local clubs and the Football Association to give a real boost to coaching in the North East and work has begun with a local community club, Wallsend Boys Club, to developing a specific recruitment programme for girls and women.
The Foundation works with local football clubs throughout Durham, Northumberland and Teesside, to provide volunteers, coaches and officials and is working with businesses to encourage employees to take an active part in their local soccer clubs.
The region’s professional clubs do a tremendous amount of work in the community, and we are working with them to get helpers and coaches to take the necessary courses to become qualified coaches themselves and then link them to a suitable local club.
