Middlesbrough schools 'Get Going, Get Rowing' finals held to boost sporting legacy
Monday, Nov 28, 2011 in Sports FoundationThe Inaugural Middlesbrough Schools 'Get Going, Get Rowing' Final on Friday 25th November really held the essence of how the Tony Blair Sports Foundation is pushing its "Inspire the North East" campaign.
In partnership with British Rowing, Concept2, Teesside University and the Middlesbrough School Sports Partnership, the foundation is driving Indoor Rowing across all schools and colleges by providing training for staff and students to deliver quality coaching to young people thus allowing them to successfully take part in this Olympic sport.
TBSF have now trained 15 Teesside University student volunteers who have been putting their newly acquired skills into practice by offering free coaching support to all schools in Middlesbrough.
Two Teesside students, Heidi Wood and Antony Pearson, are leading on the project and along with 10 other student volunteers who all put their studies aside to help out on the day ensured this exciting competition went extremely well and was a valuable and enjoyable experience for all involved!!
One of the volunteers for the day, Philippa from Teesside University says:
“When I was at school I never had the opportunity to take part in an event like this so it is great for the kids and also for me as a volunteer. It gives me experience in working with children which will hopefully help prepare me for completing my PGCE in the future. I really got into the day and with the Tony Blair Sports Foundation it ran really smoothly”
Students from Oakfields, The Kings Academy, MacMillan Academy and Trinity Catholic College all competed in this highly spirited Get Going Get Rowing final day held at Teesside University.
Maddie from Kings Academy says “I really like indoor rowing because it’s really competitive and all my friends take part with me!” Antoinette, also from Kings, added “yesterday we went to our school gym to practise for today and we have also had coaching from the students at Teesside Sport!” Callum from Oakfields School says “Indoor rowing is good for working both your upper and lower body, it keeps me fit and I really enjoy it”
The team at TBSF are looking forward to the next events in the Get Going, Get Rowing Pathway:
Northumberland Final – 5th December at Newcastle University
County Durham Final – 8th December at Durham University
Tees Valley Final – 13th December at Teesside University
