Celebrating Sport in Schools
Tuesday, Jun 26, 2012 in Sports FoundationWith both World Sport Day and National School Sport Week taking place this week, allowing thousands of children to try different sports and to learn about different cultures ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, this is an exciting time for school sport. And The Tony Blair Sports Foundation is equally excited about our school based work which has seen us working with over 50 North East schools this year as part of our ‘Inspiring the North East’ campaign, giving young people the chance to gain sports leadership qualifications.
School sport became a large part of The Tony Blair Sports Foundation at the beginning of 2012, when the Foundation became able to provide developmental courses for young people in schools thanks to funding that was awarded by Sport England. Through this funding, our Inspiring the North East campaign has seen the Foundation provide pupils with access to sports courses including Cricket Competition Organisers, Cricket Young Leaders, Basketball Activators, Tennis Competition Organisers and Tennis Young Leaders awards. Hundreds of young people throughout the North East of England have been supported by the Foundation in gaining these qualifications which have equipped them with the skills needed to set up their own after school or lunch time sports clubs, or to volunteer as officials at competitions. The Tony Blair Sports Foundation has been delighted to see so many of our newly qualified young people acting as volunteers at cricket festivals in Northumberland and County Durham and during the annual Tony Blair Tennis Challenge Cup, our successful Year 3 regional tennis competition.
To celebrate the success of these young people, here are some photos of them in action.
