Working at AGI

Team members from our Sierra Leone and Rwanda projects give their account of what it's like to work with AGI.

Lucy Carter, Rwanda Governance Advisor

"Before joining AGI, I had been a maths teacher, a civil servant in DCSF, and a management consultant (on public sector projects) for too many years. I took a year’s sabbatical in 2007 and volunteered in East Africa, so I was delighted to get back here as part of the AGI team. I work for the Prime Minister’s Office in the Government of Rwanda, with another AGI colleague in a unit based on the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit in the UK. Our role is to help our Rwandan colleagues move from monitoring progress to driving delivery, and to build their capacity and professional skills. It can be frustrating sometimes, but the rewards are huge. Recently, we’ve seen some our counterpoints blossom; taking responsibility for their work and thinking ahead, and focusing on the policy priorities which will make a real difference to Rwanda. Being able to use my experience of what I’ve seen work (and not work!) in the UK to help a country like Rwanda is genuinely exciting. Although I had some great projects as a consultant, this feels the closest to the heart of government that I’ve been, and we are made very welcome. More trivially, Rwanda is beautiful, the coffee’s great, the flowers are huge and brighter than in England, and the team is one of the best I’ve ever worked in!"

Asahi Takano, Sierra Leone Governance Advisor

"I joined AGI's Sierra Leone team in September 2008 off the back of a couple of eventful years working for the UN in Zimbabwe. Before that I had worked in the UK, in management consulting and then the NHS. The last 18 months in Freetown have absolutely flown by. My work has focussed on building up the Strategy and Policy Unit in the Office of the President. It's been hugely challenging, but massively rewarding when it goes right, like when we managed to complete the hydropower project and get power to Freetown for the first time! For me two things make this job unique - first, the access and trust granted to us is incredible - working at the heart of a foreign government, not to mention with Tony and the President, has been a real eye-opener and gives you a chance to make a difference on the big decisions. Second, our team comprises civil servants, management consultants, investment bankers and development professionals - a real all-stars team and it's been awesome working together. Combine that with the best beaches in West Africa, the sunny weather and super-friendly local people, I'll definitely miss this place... "

Shalini Unnikrishnan, Rwanda Governance Advisor

"I come to AGI from a private sector background including time at McKinsey, a technology start-up, a pharmaceutical company, IFC and most recently at the Boston Consulting Group from where I am on a year leave of absence.

At AGI Rwanda, I work at the Rwanda Development Board which was created to lead the government's efforts in fast-tracking private sector development and bringing in private investments. My specific mandate is to design and lead implementation of the systems and processes that would build the RDB's institutional capacity so it can then deliver on its big asks of supporting Rwanda reach middle income country status by 2020. The work itself has been challenging, exciting and fulfilling - after years of strategy consulting, many of my skills are directly applicable here and it is wonderful to see them put to use to build an institution that is so vital to the economic development of Rwanda. My time here has also been an amazing front row seat to politics and policy making which I had never been exposed to before. The opportunity to meet and interact with the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, get feedback on our work directly from Mr. Blair, and knowing that what I am working on is what they have agreed is most important for Rwanda in the President's agenda are of course truly unique aspects of the AGI experience. But what has made my day-to-day experience here really incredible has been the AGI team I work with - I am continually amazed by the sheer talent of this group of people, the wide range of experiences that they represent and how well we all get on with one another!"
