Rwandan President Paul Kagame inaugurated for a second term

The inauguration of the Rwandan President Paul Kagame took place in Kigali today, following his victory in the Presidential elections last month.

In his inaugural speech, President Kagame said, “This is a new beginning – we are moving to the next stage on our journey to development and prosperity. If what we have achieved together so far is any indication, even better awaits us in the years to come. There are still many challenges ahead of us, but with the trust and support the Rwandan people have shown, we are energised and inspired to go even further.”

The inauguration was attended by several African heads of state, including Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan and the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo Joseph Kabila

AGI Patron Tony Blair sent congratulations to President Kagame on his election victory: “The popular mandate received by President Kagame in the recent Presidential election is testament to the huge strides made under his formidable leadership. I am confident that, over the next seven years, President Kagame will continue to drive forward the ambitious vision that Rwandans share with him and deliver real and tangible improvements for the country.”

Mr Blair also praised Rwanda on its exceptional development since the genocide: “Rwanda has made incredible progress in the past decade – achieving outstanding levels of growth, improving its investment climate, and moving rapidly towards universal primary education and gender equality.  Above all, Rwandans have managed to rebuild their nation and achieve meaningful reconciliation and unity – with courage and dignity.”

The Africa Governance Initiative (AGI) has worked in Rwanda since 2008, helping to support the Government of Rwanda as part of a long term partnership to improve the effectiveness of public administration within government, with a view to relieving poverty and contributing towards Rwanda’s sustainable development.
